Contractor, born at Mumbai in India and grew up in Nigeria through the age of seven. She had already experienced a lot of travel and different cultures at a very early age. From the age of seven to nine, the young lady was a student at boarding schools in London. Her family relocated to Toronto and she resided there through the majority of her childhood. Contractor was a classical ballet student in Toronto. She was also a star academically. She was a student at the Etobicoke School of the Arts - a specialized arts high school that taught not just dance but also theater. Contractor, who had been dancing for more than ten years at that time and decided to focus on acting. She was awarded a full scholarship to study at the University of Toronto after graduating. She earned a master's degree in theatre and double majored in psychology and social science. After one semester at the University, Contractor went to an open audition for the production Pericles at the prestigious, world-renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival [Ontario, Canada and was offered the lead role. The year 2002 was a great one for her. Canadian critics praised her performance in 92 productions of the play. The conservatory at Stratford accepts eight men with four females, along with a couple of other people for a 20 weeks of crash courses. Contractor got a place in the next season of productions and was offered the part of Hermia In A Midsummer Night's Dream.
